The first step to mentally preparing for surgery is to think positive thoughts at all times. Undergoing any type of surgery can cause feelings of nervousness and anxiety. Surgery is a major procedure and it is understandable to be nervous or scared. However, studies have shown that people who are optimistic tend to do much better during their surgery and ultimately heal faster from the surgery. Aside from positive thoughts, it is also important to have a support system full of family members and friends to help mentally prepare for the surgery. The patient can talk to their support system about any fears or worries they may have about the surgery. Speaking about the surgery can be beneficial.

Speaking to the physician and surgeon before the surgery may also help a patient to prepare themselves for surgery. The surgeon can provide quality answers to any of the questions that the patient may have. This will ultimately help the patient to relax before their surgery. If the patient is religious, he/she may want to pray before surgery. The patient may also ask their support system to pray for them during their surgery and afterward for a fast recovery and healing process.
